Kung Fu Tea

Chinese Tea History

China is the origin of tea in the world. The history of tea in China can be dated back to 2737 B.C. when the Emperor Shen Nong tasted the first cup of water with tealeaf in by coincidence. Since the early time in China, tea has been known as healthy and refreshing drink. From Tang Dynasty (618AD – 916 AD), tea became the national drink, and the Chinese word ‘Cha’ also came into wide use. Around the same time, Buddhist monks in China started to deliver Buddhist spirit to Japan, and they also took the tea drinking culture across. The first mention of tea outside China and Japan is said to be by the Arabs in 850 AD and it was they who were known to have brought tea to Europe via Venetians circa 1559.

Today, there are hundreds of varieties in Chinese tea, categorised by regions of tea plants, ways of its production, the tastes, and its different functionalities in well being. Quite often, beautiful and vivid names are given to distinguish one from the other, such as Oriental Beauty, Iron Buddha, and Gun Powder and many more.
